THE FOURTH “R” & OTHER STORIES
BY GEORGE O. SMITH

Behold Jimmy Holden—an extraordinary experiment in the cosmic dance of intellect...

In the ordinary tapestry of childhood, Jimmy gleamed with brightness, average in stature, yet his insatiable curiosity set him on an otherworldly trajectory. His life, an interstellar odyssey, was interwoven with a machine of unprecedented capabilities—an mind-altering apparatus that transcended the limits of human instruction.

This contraption, a celestial oracle, imprinted vast volumes of knowledge into Jimmy's psyche at warp speed—unleashing the trio of skills: reading, writing, and arithmetic—while unraveling the secrets of the universe to satiate his insatiable curiosity, even revealing the blueprint for the machine itself.

Jimmy, a stellar anomaly, became a coveted gem in the eyes of those who envisioned riches in his aptitude. Some, driven to extremes, were willing to traverse the outer reaches of morality, resorting to violence to seize control of this five-year-old prodigy. Yet, even in the face of peril, the child's mind, fortified by the machine's embrace, instinctively defended itself.

Unbeknownst to all, the machine held its own secrets—the enigma of the fourth "R": REASON, an uncharted nebula of intellectual prowess, waiting to propel Jimmy into the unexplored realms of understanding...

THE LOST STORIES OF PHILIP K. DICK:
VOLUME ONE

Originally published over 70 years ago in pulp science fiction magazines such as Planet Stories and Galaxy Science Fiction, these seven stories are rare and have never been collected together in one place. They are classics written decades before Philip K. Dick became well-known for science fiction films based on his books such as Blade Runner, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, and Total Recall.

The Variable Man: He fixed things—clocks, refrigerators, vidsenders, and destinies. But he had no business in the future, where the calculators could not handle him. He was Earth’s only hope—and its sure failure!

The Crystal Crypt: Stark terror ruled the Inner-Flightship on that last Mars-Terra run. For the black-clad Leiters were on the prowl...and the grim red planet was not far behind.

The Defenders: No weapon has ever been frightful enough to put a stop to war —perhaps because we never before had any that thought for themselves!

The Hanging Stranger: Ed had always been a practical man. When he saw something was wrong he tried to correct it. Then one day he saw it hanging in the town square.

VENUS EQUILATERAL

Dozens of memorable characters...
One relay station to connect them all!
Welcome to Venus Equilateral!

Step into the captivating world of the Venus Equilateral series, where most tales unfold within the vast expanse of a space station—Venus Equilateral. This remarkable three-mile-long, one-mile-diameter station functions as a crucial communications relay linking Venus, Earth, and Mars, especially during times when Sun interference disrupts direct line-of-sight communication. Originally carved out of a nickel-iron asteroid strategically positioned at Venus' L4 point, Venus Equilateral has undergone extensive transformation. Now, it stands as a burnished steel cylinder, featuring a sizable docking port at one end and an array of communication dishes at the other. Within this cosmic hub, roughly 3000 inhabitants experience centrifugal pseudo-gravity, courtesy of the station's axial rotation. Living quarters for the crew, equipped with just over one Earth gravity, occupy the outermost level. Moving inward, the station houses offices, recreation centers, stores, churches, the cafeteria, and the iconic Joe's—the sole bar on the station. The innermost level, surrounding the zero-gravity axis, accommodates automatic machinery, hydroponic farms, storerooms, servogyroscopes with beam finders, and an air plant sustained by genetically engineered Martian sawgrass, ensuring the station's air supply through efficient photosynthesis. Operated by Venus Equilateral, Inc., a closed corporation licensed by the Interplanetary Communications Commission, the relay station plays a pivotal role in maintaining interplanetary communications. Striving to meet the terms of its license, Venus Equilateral must relay at least one message every twenty-four hours. Additionally, the corporation owns and operates the Relay Girl, an interplanetary spaceship stationed at Venus Equilateral, promising an intricate web of interstellar adventures and cosmic intrigue.
